Notes from April 17, 2019 Meeting

Dear Everybody,

We were short one fearless leader, who was with her dad at Mayo. We all send our best wishes to Natalie and her family.

A couple of members have been confined to quarters with disease. We also hope that they will be healthy enough to greet the Easter bunny with some enthusiasm.

Audrey Hickman was the member speaker today, and talked about the history of Hickman’s Family Farms. Several members mentioned that they hadn’t been aware of the early history of the Hickman’s egg farming dynasty. Audrey said that Gertie Hickman, her mother-in-law, was the reason that the company really launched because she did whatever it took to make her business successful, and delivered eggs in the back of her station wagon to whoever would buy them. From 500 baby chicks given as a wedding gift, to 10 million hens laying in several states, Hickman’s owes its destiny to one very determined little woman and her own mother-in-law, who contributed her chickens’ production to the combined effort.

Audrey also sent everybody away with a carton of eggs packed in the new packaging that is both fully recycled, and fully recyclable.  Thanks, Audrey!

Audrey and a number of the Hickmans will be attending the Easter egg roll at the White House on the Monday after Easter. The Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park will host its own Easter egg event, based on the White House egg roll, on Saturday, April 20 from 9 until about noon or so. Hickman’s Family Farms contributes eggs to this annual event. There is no admission fee, and the hunt is open to the public. Events are organized by age categories, so your little chicks and bunnies won’t be trampled. The Wigwam is always beautiful in the spring, and presents many opportunities to take nice pictures to torture your kids and grandkids with later on in life. We suggest prom night is the perfect occasion.

It was a pleasure to welcome back Melinda McCorkle, who has survived the crush of tax season, and other misadventures. We were very glad to have her with us again.

I am assuming that most of you have received the most recent newsletter that was mailed out. It is also posted on the website, and was posted on our Facebook page. If you did not receive the newsletter by email, dig through your spam file and see if it ended up there.  I have had very little feedback on it. Did you get it?

I hope you all have a very happy Easter, and that you celebrate it with the ones you care about.

All the best,
Jody Serey
