Notes from April 10, 2019 Meeting

Dear Everybody,

We hope that the ones who were felled by the flu are feeling better, and that everybody has a great rest of the week whether they were able to be with us today or not. David Serey attended as a guest. He behaved reasonably well.

We were short one fearless leader this morning, as Natalie was with her ailing puppy at the vet early this morning. Natalie had been scheduled to speak, so daughter Landrie Stahl (Traveling Princesses) filled in with her view of Virginia’s House. We learned that she started out her years with her mom’s business being parked behind the bar for safekeeping. Prodded to tell about the most memorable events, she talked about bridezillas, crazy weddings, and drama queen mothers of the groom.

Other conversations provided enlightenment this morning. Robin thanked Cathy for taking photos of her family that will also be incorporated into marketing materials, etc. We all remarked as to how good Cathy is to work with, and how reassuring she is to folks who don’t like to be photographed.

Lupe said that the Spiderman from Traveling Princesses was a big hit, and she goaded him into showing off most of his super powers. Landrie told us that he actually puts the “travel” in “traveling” and comes all the way from Thatcher to work with her. He also makes his own costumes.

Robin reminded us that her company’s special of a Trane AC unit with all the frills for $6,775 includes a 14-year guarantee for parts and labor. The offer will expire soon, so if you are on the fence, don’t delay a decision and be left behind in the heat with an exhausted old unit.

Audrey passed around flyers about Breakfast on the Farm with Supervisor (Clint) Hickman, April 23, 2019 at Justice Brothers U-Pick Farm, 18800 W. Greenway Road, Surprise, from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. RSVP by April 12 to lizfoster@azfb.org. Please include the number in your party as well as which breakfast you are attending (“Supervisor Hickman”). Bring a canned good or non-perishable item to donate to the local food bank. There is a competition between the Supervisors for the most donations. The breakfast is sponsored by the Maricopa County Farm Bureau and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. There is no charge for the catered breakfast.

Marie said that MidFirst Bank has a coin counting machine that can be brought in for fundraisers. A “Coin Wars” event is a soft approach to raising money at a charitable event, and is a fun way to stimulate giving without it feeling like a mugging.

We had a rather stomach-churning conversation about student debt, and the stress it places on people in the medical field. I think several of us were secretly glad our kids were never cut out for medical school.

Cathy reminded us that any nametag she makes is re-rhinestoned at no charge if one of your bling goes AWOL. She travels with a heat gun and adhesive, which is her version of open carry.

Brooke is currently living the stressful life of a dance mom, without the reality show to help pay for the tights and shoes. We do wish her talented progeny Leena all good luck as she dazzles judges.

We had several attempts at adjourning, but the conversation continued to break out in a new place. Eventually, the room was needed by a new group and we were forced back into the daylight and our own lives.

All the best,
Jody Serey
