Notes from February 20, 2019 Meeting

Dear Everybody,

We were subjected to climate control issues in our meeting room, so sweaters and jackets whipped on and off for the entire time. Robin did what she could, and confirmed that something was less than perfect with the system.

We were missing a few members for various reasons. Brooke is on her way to Ireland, and Natalie was waiting for Robin to come help put Virginia’s House back into warmer temperatures. Other favorite faces were missing, and we hope everybody is doing well. David Serey came as a guest, and was reasonably well-behaved.

Susan Riedel of Modern Woodmen discussed with us a variety of ways we can utilize funding and opportunities available through the philanthropy division of her company. Of primary interest are the Hometown Hero award, educational and social events, and matching funds. She also announced that there will be another night at Sauce on March 25. Details are on the agenda sent out yesterday.

Friday, March 8, 2019 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. is a fundraiser to benefit Home Engagement Lift Partnership to help with feeding homeless students in the community. The fundraiser is being supported by Modern Woodmen, and will be held at Scottsdale Waterfront Residences, 7181 E. Camelback, Scottsdale, AZ. There is no admission cost. There will be valet parking and appetizers. All proceeds raised from the project will be matched by Modern Woodmen up to $2,500.

She is also talking with Justin and Cathy Smith about potentially linking up with the Sons of the American Legion on their chicken fried steak dinner on April 3. (It should be noted that the chicken fried steak dinner is held the first Wednesday of every month, and Cathy and Justin help every single month. The cost is $7, which is a steal these days. The location is at 99th and Peoria, and the time is 5 to 7 p.m.)

Susan Fitzgerald told us about a dance being held on April 13 to benefit the Peoria Rotary Foundation. A flyer for the dance is included here in your email.

Vickie Mikoch said that she and Bill will be participating on a car show this weekend at Westbrook. Funds will go to an organization that benefits service dogs. Proceeds from the book she is currently writing will also go to help veterans’ service dogs.

Ami warned against using Home Advisor. She said that the referrals come from all over the country outside the state, and there is no way to really tell if they are legitimate or not. So just say no.

Lupe Encinas reported that the latest scam to reach her office is a telephone call saying that the electricity is off and a deposit is needed to restore service. She says it’s a scam, don’t fall for it, especially if your lights are still on when the call comes, as hers were.

We adjourned almost on time, and returned to the magic that is our individual lives.
